Moving forward

I'd hate to jinx it, but as it stands, it seems like we got through the delayed intensification phase and are ready to move forward into the maintenance phase. Next week, Luis' blood counts will be checked. If his platelets and neutrophils (i.e. immunity) are at acceptable levels, we are ready to go into this last phase of treatment. If not, we'll check his counts again the following week and go from there.

Initially, I was warned that the delayed intensification phase was going to be worst phase for Luis. The phase lasted about 2.5 months and resulted in the loss of hair, occasional sore tummies, sore legs, a couple fevers, and an eight-day stay in the hospital.

Throughout this phase and overall I suppose, Luis' spirits and energy level have been good. It's just unfortunate how trapped we have been in our house. I am constantly screening visitors for fear of Luis catching something like a cold or flu that could land him back in the hospital. I'm very happy that he has a new little buddy next door that we schedule play dates with once in a while, health permitting. The next phase of treatment should be more liberating. With only one chemo treatment scheduled at the hospital per month (and low dose oral chemo given every day), the next 1.5 to 2 years should offer a bit more freedom and perhaps a return to a normal childhood.

It's actually kind of amazing that Luis is doing so well right now. He is neutropenic (i.e. has low immunity) and sickness seems to be all around. Last week, I had a fever one day. And this week, Julien had an eye infection and a fever for a couple days. With good hand-washing by everyone and lots of reminders to keep his distance, Luis seemed to avoid catching whatever it is that Julien and I had.

You don't want to see Luis' bad side!

On a side note, Julien recently turned one year old. He is very close to walking but chickens out when I let go of his hands. He seems to be turning more and more into a toddler with teeth, jibber-jabber, a growing appetite, a bubbly personality, and a cheery defiance against the word "No".

My boys are growing so fast!
