The day started when we woke up around 5:00 a.m., pulled ourselves together, grabbed our Timmy's, then headed to London. We met up with several other Windsor and London families touched by childhood cancer. From London, we took buses to Canada's Wonderland. During the bus ride, Luis made a new buddy, Logan. He was the grandchild of Luis' nurse. We had the pleasure of spending the whole day with the them. They were inseparable.
Luis had a lot of firsts. It was the first time he rode a bus, first time he went to an amusement park, first time on bumper cars, first time on a merry-go-round, and first time he went on a roller coaster (and I'm not talking about the kiddy kind, woohoo!).
We also got to see real live dinosaurs!! Well, as close as you can get. They talked, moved their arms, tails, and heads, and they even breathed with their chests puffing in and out. Luis and Logan also spent a lot of time on the fossil dig, searching for huge dinosaur bones in the sand.
The day ended with Luis crashing on the bus and a long drive back to Windsor.
Health check
Since his last chemo appointment a month ago, Luis had one fever. His daily and weekly at-home chemo dosages are still being monitored closely, with his current dosing at 50% of the full dose. We were in London today for his chemo and we were told to have his blood counts checked in two weeks. We will see what his neutrophil levels are (i.e. an indicator of immunity) and will increase his weekly chemo to 75% if his neutrophils are at least 1.0.
Everyone who sees Luis keeps saying "Wow, he looks great". His hair is getting full and slightly wavy. He is full of energy. He seems completely normal. It would be amazing to have a fever-free month so we can enjoy the summer to the fullest. Here's hoping.
