I had quite a scare on Thursday. Luis woke up in the night and I discovered he had a fever. For cancer patients, especially with low immunity, that means get to the hospital. So I did. At 1:00 a.m., I packed up Luis and drove to the hospital. His fever dropped a bit when we arrived. He was looked over, then monitored for a few hours. The reason for his fever was not apparent (e.g. no ear infection, no rash, no sore throat, no other symptoms).
When we awoke at 7:00 a.m., his temperature was up again. Luis' port was accessed (i.e. he got a needle in the port in his chest) and they gave him antibiotics and Tylenol. They also took a throat culture and blood culture. His fever seemed to drop throughout the day and we were sent home. We went back Friday and Saturday for follow up and all was well. The tests showed nothing. The doctor believes Luis had a viral infection.

We were lucky. It could have turned into a long stay at the hospital. Another reminder of the importance of managing his exposure to germs. And think, winter is just around the corner...
