MOMMY:
With the long weekend finally over, the social worker was here today. I was shocked at the amount of resources and organizations available to us. I love this country. There are different organizations to offset transportation costs during treatment, meals during treatment in hospital, hospital parking, accommodations, and a drug plan. We still have to see if we qualify for the drug plan; it will be the most helpful. I think we should be able to qualify since it is based on financial need. Typically, it's based on the prior year's income, but in extenuating circumstances, they can base it on the current year. I think we fit the description.

This illness came at a time where Luis and I are technically unemployed. He is a couple weeks away from formally receiving his PhD degree in environmental engineering and his research assistant-ship will terminate. We are hoping he will get an intermediate environmental engineering position between Windsor and London that will offer benefits. I am on maternity leave from a contract position until December. At that time, I'm not quite sure what I will do yet. Before last week, I was planning to return to the contract position in the summer. It wasn't guaranteed that the position would be waiting for me at the end of my maternity leave like permanent jobs. Now my boy needs me and the next six months will be the most intense months of his treatment. After December, I'll have to see what my options are.
Another exciting thing the social worker shared with us is that Luis qualifies to "make a wish". You know, like all the sick kids on TV? That's going to be my boy. We have time to figure out what his wish will be and he doesn't have to use it right away. She said it could be a family trip to Disney Land, a fancy computer, a bedroom makeover, etc. There is a cap on the price, but it must be high if a family trip to Disney Land is an option. Have any other ideas? Please use the comment box for your suggestions.

Jen - my thoughts and prayers are with all of you. Just wanted to let you know that I forwarded your blog to Carl Wachholz - he is on the board at Make a Wish.
